Ganga, Shiva & Kashi

Banaras is one of the oldest living cities in the world, as old as Jerusalem, Athens and Peking. It is not the events of its long history that makes it significant to Hindus; rather, it has such a long history and it has survived and flourished through the changing fortunes of the centuries because it is significant to the Hindus.

Many of the intricacies of the Hindu tradition find a flamboyant exhibition in the city of Benaras- its complex mythological imagination, its prodigious display of divine images, its elaborate ritual tradition and its understanding of the relation of life and death- and this fact, ignites the interest of the modern man regarding the city.
