Malika Virdi, born in a Punjabi family and brought up in Delhi decided to move to Munsiyari (Uttarakhand) 30 years ago, to live a life close to the land as a farmer. With people desiring to relocate to the mountains now more than ever, I met her with some questions related to this. She shared her story and her learnings with me. She is in her second term as the sarpanch of the van panchayat and has been an active citizen, vocal about issues concerning ecology and sustainability. She, along with the people of her village, runs a community-owned rural tourism project called The Himalayan Ark https://www.himalayanark.com. Alongside, through the local rural women’s collective, Maati, she is committed to working on issues concerning rural mountain women. The Human Condition is a series on Ethereal where we interview individuals around some of the larger, meaningful, and important aspects of human life. The views, facts, and opinions expressed by the individuals in this video are from them as well as their own and not necessarily the same as that of the creators of the video.
